He went to school, acquired a degree in English Literature, plunged into the Freedom Movement of India against British rule, got imnprisoned and abandoned all that to delve into philosophical questions regarding life, death and spirituality that would later transform many, as the Spiritual Teacher to spread knowledge of Vedanta philosophy worldwide. On the holy day of Mahashivaratri, 25th February, 1949, Balan was initiated into the Sannyasa order by Swami Sivananda, with the name “Swami Chinmayananda Saraswati. He personally authored over 95 books, including commentaries on the major Upanishads and an extremely well composed commentary on the Bhagavad-gita. Swami Chinmayananda founded Chinmaya Mission, a spiritual renaissance movement in1953 that follows the Vedic teacher-student tradition in the ageless wisdom of Advaita Vedanta. He travelled extensively in India, realizing that the spiritual teachings were for all mnankind, and said, Our Vision is not for Hindus only.” Swami Chinmayananda is famed for his depth, clarity, eloquence, wit and humour. Teacher extraordinaire, gracious Guru and an anchor of wisdom, Swami Chinmayananda’s life was indeed a saga beyond definition! The Government of India released the Commemorative Coin on the occasion of Birth centenary of Swami Chinmayananda on 8th May 2015.
