Situated at the convergence of Gurupura and Nethravathi rivers, the Old Port (Bunder) at Mangalore had its own constraints to meet the growing demand for sea trade. Hence, the need for a new port was felt post-independence and with the visionary leadership of Late U. Srinivas Mallya, former MP of the region the New Mangalore Port was born. The Mangalore Harbour Project was set up in the year 1962 and the construction commenced in 1968. The Port was inaugurated on 11th January 1975.

New Mangalore Port which is also known as Gateway of Karnataka is the only Major Port of Karnataka.

Over the years the Port has grown from the level of handling less than a lakh tonne of traffic in 1974-75 to 45.71 MMT handled during the FY 2023-24.
