Professor M.S. Swaminathan, widely revered as the “Father of Green Revolution in India”, revolutionized agriculture by integrating science, policy and public participation. Born in 1925 in Tamil Nadu, he earned degrees in agriculture and genetics, culminating in a Ph.D. from Cambridge. His pioneering research in plant genetics, particularly rice and wheat, laid the foundation for India’s food self-sufficiency during the 1960s and 70s. He was instrumental in introducing dwarf wheat varieties, improving rice yields and preserving crop genetic resources.
Swaminathan held top leadership roles including Director General of ICAR and IRRI and founded the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation in 1988 to promote sustainable, equitable development. His public service extended to parliamentary and advisory roles including chairing the National Commission on Farmers.
He received over 80 honorary doctorates and prestigious awards like the World Food Prize, Tyler Prize and Ramon Magsaysay Award. Globally influential, he shaped policies on biodiversity, food security, eco-technology and championed farmer rights and community-based conservation.
A lifelong advocate of science for humanity, his “Evergreen Revolution” promoted productivity without ecological harm. He was conferred the Bharat Ratna posthumously in 2024. Swaminathan’s legacy lives on through his vision of inclusive, sustainable agriculture and bio-happiness, making him a towering figure in global development.

- Only replacement requests of Commemorative Coins shall be considered depending on the merit of the case/reason for asking the replacement (e.g. damaged coin/packaging).
- Any complaints regarding non-receipt of coins/products must be reported to the concerned department through e-mail (marketing.igmh@spmcil.com) within fifteen (15) days from the dispatch date.
- Requests for product replacement (if any) must be raised within one (1) day from the date of receipt of the coin/product through e-mail (marketing.igmh@spmcil.com). Any requests received after this period will not be entertained.
4) Shipping loss and Refund Policy:
- In case the article is lost during transit, being an Insured article, claims for refunds or replacement coin sets will be considered only after receiving the compensation amount for the lost article from the postal department.
